After painting continuously since 1971, I stopped, from May, 1999 until March,
2000. During this period I moved my studio from New York City to the Atlantic
coast of Rhode Island. Now I paint where the earth meets the sky.
Through these months I have come to realize that my photographic activity is
a journal representing my concerns and values. The special scrutiny with which
I regard my paintings now extends upon the ground of our new yard. The soil,
rocks and foliage are a kind of pigment or medium with which to form images. The
following pictures were edited from over two thousand pairs made during the
past year. They chronicle the migration of my “paint mountains”,
evolving practice and enjoyment of the garden. Cross your eyes to superimpose
each pair of images, refocus, and observe the three-dimensional image.
